Rabindranath Tagore Proshno ("Question") Translation by Swarup Dutta on YouTube: Oh God, Again and again, over the ages You have sent your messengers as sages To this world unkind. They taught us to have mercy on all, Taught us to love all, Taught us to free the poison of hatred from our mind. They are honorable, They are memorable, Yet, waiting on the doorway - in today's moment-miserable I turned them away - My homage fading away. I have seen the hidden jealousy, Like the night of a...

Rabindranath Tagore Tobu Mone Rekho This poem was written in 1887. English translation by Anjan Ganguly on Geetabitan: Forget me not, forget me not despite if I venture at a distant place. Forget me not, despite if older passion is covered with the newer lattice of ardor. Being within proximity, I disguise myself as the shadow – Forget me not. If my eyes are soaked, If someday the game comes to the end in a dreamy night, Forget me not. If someday on an autumn morning my mission is concerned -...

Rabindranath Tagore The Hero It is evening and the sun goes down. The waste of Joradighi lies wan and grey before us. The land is desolate and barren. You are frightened and thinking-"I know not where we have come to." I say to you, "Mother, do not be afraid." The meadow is prickly with spiky grass, and through it runs a narrow broken path. There are no cattle to be seen in the wide field; they have gone to their village stalls. It grows dark and dim on the land and sky, and...

Rabindranath Tagore The Vision Tagore reads from his 1930 Hibbert Lecture on The Religion of Man: When I was eighteen, a sudden spring breeze of religious experience for the first time came to my life and passed away leaving in my memory a direct message of spiritual reality. One day while I stood watching at early dawn the sun sending out its rays from behind the trees, I suddenly felt as if some ancient mist had in a moment lifted from my sight, and the morning light on the face of the world...

Rabindranath Tagore Sonar Tari (The Golden Boat) Clouds rumbling in the sky; teeming rain. I sit on the river bank, sad and alone. The sheaves lie gathered, harvest has ended, The river is swollen and fierce in its flow. As we cut the paddy it started to rain. One small paddy-field, no one but me - Flood-waters twisting and swirling everywhere. Trees on the far bank; smear shadows like ink On a village painted on deep morning grey. On this side a paddy-field, no one but me. Who is this,...

Rabindranath Tagore The Trumpet The trumpet lies in the dust. The wind is weary, the light is dead. Ah, the evil day! Come fighters, carrying your flags and singer with your songs! Come pilgrims, hurrying on your journey! The trumpet lies in the dust waiting for us. I was on my way to the temple with my evening offerings. Seeking for the heaven of rest after the day's dusty toil; Hoping my hurts would be healed and stains in my garments washed white, When I found thy trumpet lying in the dust....

Rabindranath Tagore Duhsamay (The Testing Time) The shadow of twilight is falling, Not a single tone to be heard, Just a loner in the vast skies, you flying, And your body has grown tired, A silent sense of dread The shadow retains the cover O sightless bird, as your need, Your flight is not yet over. Not a murmuring forest is this, An ocean below fumes like a python in rage Not a garden of roses it is, Foams and bubbles are rocking as you gaze. The forest on the shore not in sight Not even...

Rabindranath Tagore Aamar Ke Nibi Bhai An 1890 poem. Translation by Tagore from Geetabitan: Come friend, who can free me from bonds of toil, For I lag behind while the pilgrims rush to follow their vision. Come like a sudden flood that runs with its offerings to the sea, Sweep me away from the load that drags me down. Come from among the crowd, You, to whom I fully belong, Who can call me by my own true name And smile and be known to me for ever. আমারে কে নিবি ভাই,...

Rabindranath Tagore Chhoto Boro (Big and Small) I haven't really got to grow up yet:   I'm just a child, and so I'm still quite small. One day I'll be much older than Big Brother—   As old as Father is, and just as tall. If Dada then won't learn his lessons, But with his pet birds keeps on messing, I'll really scoldh im well and good— "Now just you learn your lessons as you should," I'll tell him, and "Be quiet you naughty boy,"   I'll say, when I'm as big as...

Rabindranath Tagore Authorship You say that father write a lot of books, but what he write I don't understand. He was reading to you all the evening, but could you really make out what he meant? What nice stores, mother, you can tell us! Why can't father write like that, I wonder? Did he never hear from his own mother stories of giants and fairies and princesses? Has he forgotten them all? Often when he gets late for his bath you have to and call him an hundred times. You wait and keep his...

Rabindranath Tagore Andhojone Deho Aalo English translation by Anjan Ganguly on Geetabitan Bestow light to the unsighted, Endow life to the dead. Tender a drop of mercy, O' Gracious. Rock-hard is my arid heart - Soak my parched eyes with flowing love. Send your hearty call to him Who doesn't call you, Protect him intimately Who looks away from you. He who roams thirsty On the banks of your ocean of nectar - Sooth him with your flow of affection, Help him drink the divine potion. That I had...

Rabindranath Tagore Aami Songsare Mon Diyechhinu The poem was written in 1900. English translation by the author on Gettabitan: I threw away my heart in the world; you took it up. I sought for joy and gathered sorrow, you gave me sorrow and I found joy. My heart was scattered in pieces, you picked them up in your hand And strung them in a thread of love. You let me wander from door to door to show me at last how near You are. Your love plunged me into the deep trouble. When I raised my head I...
